ATSIP Swansea Report 2010
This year’s ATSiP Conference was another
glowing success I am pleased to report!
Conference 2010, if you were not there was at Swansea University
on the outskirts of Swansea City centre itself.
Based on a purpose-built campus, the University has a number
of impressive facilities, from Singleton Abbey, a 19th Century
mansion house, Taliesin Theatre to the latest purpose-built
academic and on-campus accommodation facilities which provided
the majority of conference delegates (other than the locals)
with particularly comfortable accommodation.
|
The campus overlooks the wonderful Swansea Bay, with nearby
Mumbles, and the marina at opposite ends of the Bay, being particularly
attractive features.
Both locations provided venues for the two Conference evening
meals, which again, were particularly enjoyable!
|
|
For those attending, the conference itself provided clearly
targeted and particularly relevant talks given the professional
background of those attending.
These included ‘high performance computing’ to greatly
enhance large dataset analysis, the ‘implementation of
Neural Networks through connectionist / memory modelling’,
using the programming language ‘PHP to construct more
methodologically sound’ online questionnaires, and, a
Biopac training session given by Robert Jones of Linton Instruments
who are UK distributors of this equipment found in many psychology
departments. Pete Beaman reported on a HEaTED Conference and Noel Taylor led a discussion on The Changing Role of Technicians and added an original musical flavour.

|
Discussion points were also prompted by issues such as:
‘the
changing role of technicians’, ‘mentoring of HE
staff’
and of course by the ATSiP AGM itself.
|
|
Thus, ATSiP members are already eagerly relishing the prospect
of next year’s conference which it is hoped will be held
at Oxford Brookes for the first time.
